Race Grid and competition divisions

Teams race for division placement on Saturday. All teams race twice: morning and afternoon. 

Each team's Saturday times are added together. Teams are ranked fastest to slowest based on total time, and placed into divisions. 

On Sunday, they race in their divisions for gold, silver and bronze, or runners-up.

Here's your 2018 Race Grid and divisions!

The 2018 race grid is available, and you might notice a few differences. Based on the number of teams in the festival and feedback from previous years, EDBFA's Race Committee has made some changes for the better.

Mixed

Mixed teams must have at least 8 male and 8 female paddlers. The remaining 4 paddlers may comprise any gender.

Women’s

Women's teams comprise 20 female-identified paddlers, and paddle in the Mulan division.

2018 Challenge Cups

The following are 250 m races:

  • Grassroots—teams with no more than 2 experienced paddlers.
  • Novice—teams with 8 or more new paddlers.
  • Grand Master Dragons—teams with all paddlers aged 50+*
  • Pink Ribbon—women's teams comprising breast cancer survivors

Plus: 

  • 2000 m challenge cup*

Challenge Cups race for gold medals only. When multiple heats are required, the fastest time in all heats is awarded gold. 

*Entrance into these challenges is via signup at the info tent at festival. 

 

As of August 13, 27 teams—8 female; 19 mixed—were registered in the Edmonton Dragon Boat Festival. 

Race Schedule

Adjustments to the race course, times, race schedule, rules and cancellation of race heats may occur due to a number of circumstances including weather, daylight, water conditions and safety. 

These adjustments are a part of dragon boating and are at the sole discretion of the race officials or the EDBFA and are final without appeal.
